New Zealand has one of the lowest unemployment rates in the world and is experiencing immediate and long term skills shortages in various areas of employment. New Zealand Minister of Immigration, Hon David Cunliffe, was recorded in the Immigration Practitioners Bulletin, (2006, p.58) as saying “New Zealand is currently facing acute skills shortages and thirty percent of businesses state that their most pressing concern is skill shortages”. New Zealand’s economy is heavily reliant on attracting skilled workers to maintain current economic growth and development.
Skills shortages vary from region to region and this is acknowledged by Immigration New Zealand, who have produced a Immediate Skills Shortages List, mainly to enhance and streamline the processing of work visas and approvals in principle required for work visas where there is a known regional labour market skills shortage. For most occupations you will need to have the specified qualifications and work experience unless they are MANDATORY.
If you have you are working in an occupation listed on the Immediate Skills Shortages List, and have the specified qualifications and work experience you may qualify for a Work Visa.
