Introducing the IELTS One Skill Retake: A Game-Changer for Test Takers

In an effort to provide greater flexibility and opportunity for English language test takers, the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) has introduced a groundbreaking new option: the One Skill Retake. This option, available for both the Academic and General Training tests, allows individuals to retake one section of their IELTS test within 60 days of the original test date. This innovation comes as a boon for many applicants seeking to meet English language proficiency requirements for various visas, including those for Immigration New Zealand (INZ).

Background: Expanding Horizons

Since 2015, Immigration New Zealand (INZ) has recognized the IELTS provider as one of the accepted English language tests for visa applicants. Over the years, the IELTS has become a preferred choice for many individuals aiming to demonstrate their English proficiency. Building on this foundation, the introduction of the One Skill Retake marks another step forward in enhancing accessibility and fairness in language testing.

How It Works

The One Skill Retake option enables test takers to focus on improving their performance in a specific section—whether it be Listening, Reading, Writing, or Speaking—without the need to retake the entire test. This targeted approach not only saves time but also allows individuals to address areas where they may require additional practice or support.

To be eligible for the One Skill Retake, test takers must have originally sat the IELTS test on a computer at one of the eligible IELTS test centers, either offshore or at specific locations in New Zealand. These centers include IDP IELTS Auckland, Massey University – Auckland, and Massey University – Wellington.

Alignment with Visa Requirements

Importantly, the One Skill Retake option aligns with the English language proficiency requirements set by various immigration authorities, including the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA), Australian Department of Home Affairs, and United Kingdom Visa and Immigration. This means that individuals who opt for the One Skill Retake can rest assured that their results will be accepted for visa applications.

Documentation and Verification

Test takers who choose to undertake the One Skill Retake will receive an IELTS test report that clearly indicates their completion of this option. The report will specify the section that was retaken, along with the results achieved. It is important to note that, for the purpose of calculating the age of the IELTS document, the date of the original test will be considered, not the date of the One Skill Retake.

Additionally, the results of the One Skill Retake can be verified through the IELTS results service, providing further assurance and transparency in the testing process.
