English Language Requirements
English language proficiency is a critical factor for individuals seeking visas to New Zealand, especially for those intending to settle permanently. The requirements vary depending on the visa type, with higher standards typically needed for resident visas.
Accredited Employer Work Visas:
ANZSCO Skill Level 1 to 3 Occupations
Applicants for occupations at skill levels 1 to 3 are not required to provide evidence of English proficiency when applying for an AEWV. While there are no set English language requirements, a sufficient level of English proficiency is generally expected for working in New Zealand. The required proficiency may vary depending on employer expectations and job descriptions.
Certain professions, such as teachers, nurses, and doctors, may necessitate even higher levels of English proficiency. While this is not a requirement set by Immigration New Zealand (INZ), it may be mandated by professional bodies responsible for occupational registrations.
ANZSCO Skill Level 4 to 5 Occupations
However, applicants for skill levels 4 and 5 occupations must provide evidence demonstrating that they meet specific English language requirements.
Fee-Paying Student Visas:
INZ does not set English language requirements for student visas, but individual education providers may have their criteria, particularly at the tertiary level.
Skilled Resident Visas:
For principal applicants in categories like Skilled Migrant, Straight to Residence, and Work to Residence visas, a high level of English proficiency is usually required. These visas target skilled migrants who can contribute to New Zealand’s workforce. Certain professions may require even higher English proficiency, although this is not mandated by Immigration New Zealand but may be required by professional bodies.
Demonstrating English Proficiency:
Applicants can show English proficiency through Accepted English Language Test Results or alternative evidence. If minimum requirements are not met, ESOL tuition in New Zealand can be pursued to improve English skills.
Accepted English Language Tests:
INZ accepts tests from various providers such as IELTS, OET, Cambridge English First, Pearson PTE: Academic, and TOEFL iBT. Minimum scores are specified for principal and secondary applicants.
Alternative Evidence:
Alternative evidence includes citizenship from certain countries or holding recognised qualifications comparable to a bachelor’s or higher degree from specified countries.
What If Your Partner or Child Don’t Meet the Minimum Standard?
Meeting minimum requirements is crucial for resident visa approval. If your partner or child aged 16 or older does not meet the criteria, you can opt for ESOL tuition in New Zealand. This allows them to improve their English skills, and upon payment and meeting other visa requirements, a residence class visa may be granted.
