NZQA – International Qualifications Assessment

One crucial aspect of applying to live and work in New Zealand is the evaluation of qualifications by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA). The NZQA is tasked with maintaining the quality of qualifications listed on the New Zealand Qualifications and Credentials Framework (NZQCF). This framework serves as a comprehensive list of approved qualifications and credentials in New Zealand, facilitating comparisons for countries and regions worldwide.

For those wanting to apply under the SMC Resident Visa, an International Qualification Assessment (IQA) from NZQA might be necessary to determine the level of your qualification. The outcome of this assessment affects the number of points you can claim under the SMC.

It is important to know that NZQA evaluates tertiary or vocational upper-secondary qualifications meeting specific criteria. However, they do not assess secondary school qualifications, incomplete programs of study, or certain other non-formal qualifications.

NZQA also maintains a List of Qualifications Exempt from Assessment (LQEA), which shows the equivalent level of certain overseas qualifications against the New Zealand Qualifications Framework. Qualifications on this list do not need assessment by NZQA and may qualify for points on the SMC points table.

Understanding qualification assessment for immigration purposes can be complex. With our consultancy’s support, you can confidently pursue your New Zealand immigration goals.
