Update: List of Qualifications Exemption

March 22, 2024

Introduction:

In an effort to streamline the visa pathway for applicants with overseas qualifications, New Zealand is set to implement Phase 2 updates to the List of Qualifications Exempt from Assessment (LQEA) starting March 25, 2024. This initiative aims to facilitate a smoother transition for skilled migrants seeking residency in New Zealand by recognising qualifications from additional countries and including specific degree levels.

What’s Changing:

Effective March 25, 2024, the LQEA will include qualifications awarded in countries such as Australia, Canada, China, Fiji, and Japan. Furthermore, updates will be made for countries added to the list in September 2023, namely Malaysia, South Africa, and the United States of America. Notably, master’s degrees from Malaysia and doctoral degrees from South Africa and the United States of America will be added to the list, expanding the range of recognized qualifications.

Continued Updates:

These updates signify ongoing efforts to ensure that the LQEA remains current and comprehensive. More qualifications from additional countries are expected to be added in subsequent phases, further enhancing the accessibility of the visa process for skilled migrants.

Where to Find More Information:

For individuals seeking further information on the LQEA and whether they need to apply for an International Qualification Assessment, resources are available on the NZQA website. This includes guidance on the International Qualifications Assessment process, ensuring that applicants are well-informed and prepared.

Conclusion:

The expansion of the List of Qualifications Exempt from Assessment reflects New Zealand’s commitment to attracting and retaining skilled professionals from around the world. By recognising a broader range of qualifications and facilitating a streamlined visa pathway, New Zealand continues to position itself as an attractive destination for individuals seeking new opportunities and experiences.
